Why Puerarin Extract Has Anti-anxiety Effect?
- Jul 22, 2019 -

In a study published in the Journal Metabolic Brain Disease entitled "The anxiolytic-like effects of Puerarin are associated with the changes of monoaminergic neurotransmitters and biosynthesis of allopregnanolone in the brain", researchers from Jinan University found that puerarin has anti-coke properties. It may be related to the normalization of 5-HT level in brain and the biosynthesis of isoproterenol.

Anxiety disorder is a serious and arduous mental disease, which often becomes a chronic clinical disease. Puerarin extract has been shown to be effective in the treatment of depression. However, few studies have focused on the anti-anxiety effect of puerarin extract. Current studies aim to evaluate the anti-anxiety effect of puerarin  extract and its possible mechanism.

To assess this, researchers conducted behavioral tests, namely Vogel conflict test (VTCT), elevated plus maze test (EPMT) and open field test (OFT). The data showed that, similar to sertraline (15 mg/kg, i.g.), puerarin (60 and 120 mg/kg, i.g.) produced anti-anxiety-like effects in VTCT and EMIT, respectively, without affecting the exercise activity of OFT.

In addition, consistent with SER, puerarin (60 and 120 mg/kg, i.g.) increased the levels of isoprogesterone and serotonin (5-HT) in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, respectively.
