Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally found in pets and humans. It helps us and our pets relax, de-stress and sleep as a supplement. Melatonin can help your dog feel healthier and happier when used correctly.

3. Is Melatonin Safe for Dogs

American Kennel Club’s website stated that the calming properties of melatonin help treat separation anxiety in dogs and the stress from noise such as fireworks, thunderstorms, or other noise phobias. The dosage of melatonin depends on the dog’s weight. It generally recommends 1mg per 20 pounds. It works after 30mins later. Please note that this dose should be repeated no more than 3 times a day at intervals of 8 hours each. If your pet may not be too keen on taking pills, consider melatonin powder or mixing it with food.

The biggest side effect of melatonin is drowsiness. It can also lead to indigestion and accelerate heart rate in some animals. It is important to talk with your veterinarian before giving your pet melatonin.
