Traditional wisdom holds that a high-fat diet is not conducive to blood lipids. In 1913, Anitschkow of the former Soviet Union found that the plasma cholesterol was elevated after 70 days of eating high cholesterol and high-fat food, and aortic atherosclerosis occurred. 

Twenty years later, Wizens and Sproul repeated the test with rats for up to 700 days but could not reach a consistent conclusion. Rabbits are herbivores. Their ancestors have been optimized for maximum efficacy during the long evolutionary process. In order to adapt to herbivores, the metabolic function of cholesterol and fat has been partially degraded. This chronic adaptive change is the law of survival in nature. Rats are omnivores, so high cholesterol and a high-fat diet does not pose a threat. 

However, Barrington's research found a beneficial effect. In inbred mice, intake of KD reduced LDL cholesterol and increased HDL cholesterol. It is generally believed that eating carbohydrates increases the levels of glucose and insulin in the blood, activates β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, which leads to an increase in endogenous cholesterol synthesis. 

Under the premise of constant total calories, KD reduces carbohydrate intake, lowers serum insulin levels, increases insulin sensitivity, reduces insulin resistance, and increases fat catabolism, thereby lowering blood lipids. 

KD induces the expression of fibroblast growth factor (FGF-1). FGF-1 is a metabolic regulator of blood lipids, serum phosphorus, and active vitamin D levels, and promotes the elimination of triglycerides in the liver.


▄ Clinical observation


  • The ketogenic diet significantly reduces triglycerides, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein. Ketone bodies are known as "super metabolic fuels."

  • In newborns, colostrum ketone is a nutritional requirement and is therefore also known as nutrient ketosis. There is growing evidence that criticism of saturated fatty acids is wrong. 

  • A retrospective study of a small sample size of 31 outpatients showed that after eating for more than 90 days, the triglyceride decreased by an average of (28.3 ± 5.7) %. 

  • The American Women's Health Study (WHI) included a total of 48,835 postmenopausal women aged 50-79 in 40 clinical research centers, randomly assigned to 19,541 (40%) and 29,294 (60%) controls, with an average follow-up of 8.1 years. 

  • The results showed that there was no difference between low-density lipoprotein levels and cardiovascular disease rates of ~10% saturated fatty acid consumption and >14% consumption.
