Can Melatonin Cause Weight Gain?
- Aug 30, 2021 -

The answer definitely is no. Studies have demonstrated that melatonin may be used for obesity control. It can improve the effect that people are planning weight loss programs.

A study from Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark found that taking 1-3mg of melatonin a day can reduce participants' body fat by 7% and gained 3.5% of their lean weight over 12 months, compared to people taking placebos without any dietary and exercise interventions.

The reason why melatonin can reduce body fat and weight gain is widely believed to be associated with brown adipose tissue. Brown fat can burn white fat, while melatonin can help better activate brown fat. It helps convert fat into energy instead of storing it, and it can increase the heat production capacity of mitochondria. Mitochondria make the calorie burning mechanism work. Although melatonin alone does not help a lot of weight loss, it is recommended as a complementary weight loss strategy when used with increasing physical activity and changing bad eating habits.

Since melatonin can control obesity, how to increase the secretion of melatonin?

1. There is a circadian rhythm about melatonin’s secretion, light stimulation weakens after nightfall, the enzyme activity of pineal synthesis melatonin is enhanced. The level of melatonin secretion in the body increases accordingly, reaching the peak at 2-3 a.m. If you still don't sleep at bedtime, the stimulation of light can affect the secretion of melatonin.

2. The amount of melatonin secretion is regulated by the intensity of ultraviolet rays, especially blue light. Blue light on the screen of electronic products inhibits melatonin secretion. So, it is important to try to keep less contact with electronic products before bedtime if you want to secrete more melatonin.

3.  the matrix of melatonin synthesis is tryptophan. When the ingestion of it is insufficient, the secretion of melatonin is naturally affected. Therefore,  if you want to secrete more melatonin, eat more foods rich in tryptophan.
