BHB Salts Powder and Polycystic Kidney Disease - Ⅳ
- Oct 30, 2019 -

So far, we have learn what PKD is. In the following articles we will learn what BHB is and how it act on PKD.

BHB is an abbreviation for beta-hydroxybutyrate. It is very much related with ketogenic diets. Since the interest in ketogenic diets continues to grow, you may already know what BHB is. But for the people who don’t know what it is or the people just have heard of the name, we are still going to explain what BHB is in this article.

Our bodies have mainly three energy sources. They are glucose, fat and protein. In the long evolutionary process, our body has evolved to preferentially consume glucose as energy. Fat consumption begins only when glucose is insufficient.

The ketogenic diet forces the body to start consuming fat as energy by lowering the proportion of carbohydrates (Glucose is produced when carbohydrates are digested or metabolized.) in the diet and increasing the proportion of fat.

During this process, the body switches from burning glucose to fat. As the result, the body begin to generate ketone bodies. They are mainly three types of ketone bodies: Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate (AcAc) and acetone. BHB is the most abundant one and account 78% of the total ketone bodies.

In general, BHB has the following benefits:

1. It supports cognitive function.

2. It aids gene expression.

3. It combats oxidative stress and inflammation.

In the next article, we will reveal the new research findings on BHB and how it act on PKD.
