BHB Salts Powder and Polycystic Kidney Disease - Ⅰ
- Oct 24, 2019 -

Polycystic kidney disease is a common hereditary kidney disease (PKD). Its main manifestation is the appearance of multiple cysts of different sizes in the kidney. As the cysts continue to enlarge, the structure and function of the kidneys are eventually destroyed, which leads to end-stage renal failure.

According to different genetic methods, it can be divided into autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD).

ADPKD is one of the most common single-gene hereditary nephropathy, with an incidence rate of 1/1000~1/4000. The age of onset is 30~50 years old. Therefore, it is also called "adult polycystic kidney disease" in the past. In fact, the disease can occur at any age, even in the fetus, so the term "adult" is not accurate and has been discontinued. In addition to affecting the kidneys, ADPKD also causes hepatic cysts, pancreatic cysts, intracranial aneurysms, abnormal heart valves, etc. Therefore, it is also a systemic disease.

ARPKD is a recessive hereditary nephropathy that usually manifests itself in infancy, so it used to be called "infant polycystic kidney disease" and a small part occurred in children or adolescents. The incidence rate is about 1/10,000 to 1/4 million, often accompanied by hepatic cysts. Since ARPKD is a rare disease that occurs mostly in children, this article only introduces ADPKD.

Scientist have been studying how to fight PKD more effectively for long time, but the progress is slow. But recently, a biochemist at the University of California discovered that BHB (beta hydroxybutyrate) has a special effect on PKD.

In the following articles, we are going to learn more detailed facts of PKD and how BHB affect this disease.
