Valerian extract is widely used all over the world. Belgium uses its underground powder and extract tincture as traditional tranquilizer, Canada as OTC traditional herbal medicine to help insomnia, Switzerland uses root as tea or tincture, Sweden as natural product and also as a drug range; in the former Soviet Union, 24 species of Valerian plants are used as tranquilizers. For medicinal purposes; the German Commission E has agreed to be an over-the-counter drug, and 57 frequently used herbal preparations have been marketed as sedatives (both unilateral and compound), of which Vivinox of the German company Dr. Mann Pharm has to take a tranquilizing sugar coated tablet for restlessness and insomnia; the United States approved OTC in 1994 as a food supplement.
Primary Function:
1. Antispasmodic and antiarrhythmic effects
Valerian water extract can prolong the effective refractory period and inhibit the self-regulation of isolated myocardial fibers of guinea pigs. Isolated oxalic acid has a temporary hypotensive effect similar to acetylcholine.
2. Hepatoprotective effect
For carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damage in rabbits, valerian 3-59 was given every day. Pathological section studies showed that it had a considerable protective effect on rabbit liver.
3. Anticonvulsive effect
Valerian essential oil can resist convulsions caused by pentylenetetrazol, thiosemicarbazide and electroshock.
4. Other roles
Cytotoxicity, anticancer, antidepressant, antimicrobial and antiviral effects, etc.
